Morocco Mini Series: Essaouira
Morocco had long been at the top of my list of places to visit. So, a couple of years ago, we did a little research, booked some last minute flights and a nippy little Fiat and set off. First stop, Essaouira. Situated on the Atlantic Coast, it is known as the ‘Wind City of Africa’ - the resultant lack of beach tourists means that it has retained its culture and character.
Stepping out of the car was my first real experience of this North African culture. It was different to anything I’d imagined. I was quite overwhelmed as we navigated the narrow streets with two large suitcases, under the beady stares of the locals. Needless to say, getting to the Riad was quite a relief. Off of the streets and into the peace, we were greeted with mint tea and Moroccan treats and taken up to our traditionally styled bedroom.
Up a couple of flights of stairs is the rooftop - a space where you can look across the city and enjoy breakfast.
Back at street level and we took our first trip to the market. Here, I was struck by the dichotomy: on the one hand, there’s poverty all around, but on the other, there’s vibrant colours and textures, spice aromas, amazing food, a real richness. It’s hard to get your head around.
The port is another interesting experience. Its an assault on your sense of smell and certainly not somewhere to be heading if you don’t like fish. But if you are a fish fan, then you are in for a treat. Walk through the bustling chaos, pick up your meal of choice and make your way to the end of the pier, where your fish can be cooked over hot coal. Sit in the sun, enjoy your lunch and watch the world go by before the fog rolls in.
Essaouira is a city perfect for foodies, surfers and market-goers. Its an ideal way to dip your toes into the Moroccan culture before reaching Marrakech!
